Where to stay in Seoul for nightlife: Hongdae vs Itaewon vs Gangnam
On this page · 7 sections
If nights out are a big part of your Seoul trip, stay in the area where you plan to party. Pick Hongdae for cheap, easy, walk-in clubs; Itaewon for the most international, English-friendly crowd; Gangnam only if your group plans to book tables at upscale clubs. The reason is simple: Seoul clubs get busy around 1 a.m., and the last subway leaves around that time or earlier.
Why your hotel area matters more for a night out
Most Seoul clubs open at 22:00 and close around 05:00, and they are fairly empty before midnight (club hours). Since 2022, the Seoul subway runs until about 1 a.m. on weekdays and only until midnight on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. That makes Friday a "weekday" for the subway, while Saturday ends about an hour earlier.
So on a typical night you leave the club after the last train. Your choices are a taxi, a night bus, or waiting for the morning trains. If your hotel is a short walk from the club street, none of that matters.

Book Korean Clubs →Hongdae: easiest first night out
Hongdae is Seoul's hip-hop and K-pop club district next to Hongik University. Entry is usually ₩10,000–30,000, many clubs let women in free, and most take walk-ins. It has the youngest crowd in Seoul, and it works well if you are going out alone. See the full list on our Hongdae clubs page.
Where to stay: near Hongik University Station or Sangsu Station. Hongik University Station is on Line 2, the AREX airport line and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line, so you can ride the AREX straight from Incheon Airport. Sangsu Station (Line 6) also serves the Hongdae area.
Daytime: VisitKorea describes Hongdae as a young neighborhood of clothing, cosmetics and book shops, cafés and street performers, with its own "Club Street". Street music runs on the walking street in the evening, and the Yeonnam park cafés are a good dinner stop before the clubs.
Watch out for: popular clubs queue after 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays and may stop letting people in when full.
For an early-evening plan before the clubs, a Han River night cruise and Gwangjang Market tour is one bookable option.
Itaewon: most international and English-friendly
Itaewon has the highest share of foreign visitors of any Seoul nightlife area. Music leans toward house, techno, disco and R&B as well as hip-hop. Most staff speak English, and ages are more mixed, from the 20s into the 40s. More on the Itaewon clubs page.
Where to stay: near Itaewon Station (Line 6). Itaewon was Seoul's first special tourist zone, and the shops and restaurants that cater to foreigners sit close to the station. There is a tourist information center inside Itaewon Station.
Daytime: VisitKorea counts around 2,000 shops in the zone, and World Food Street is a good place for dinner from many countries. Haebangchon has rooftops with a view of N Seoul Tower.
Watch out for: many Itaewon clubs run on Fridays and Saturdays only and are quiet mid-week. If your trip is Sunday to Thursday, check club hours before choosing Itaewon for the nightlife alone.
Gangnam: upscale clubs, but plan around tables
Gangnam is Seoul's upscale nightlife area, with large EDM clubs, hip-hop venues and VIP lounges in Apgujeong and Cheongdam. It costs more: main tables start around ₩750,000 and VIP tables around ₩1,500,000 (club prices). The door is strict about dress, so no shorts, sandals or sportswear (dress code). Groups with a booked table walk straight in, while solo men and weekend walk-ins without a table are often turned away. See the Gangnam clubs page.
Where to stay: this is the trickiest area, because "Gangnam" is large and the clubs are spread out. Club ACE is in Sinsa, Core Lounge and DM Seoul are in Apgujeong, and Arzu is in Cheongdam. A hotel near Gangnam Station (Line 2) is not automatically close to them. Look near Sinsa Station (Line 3 and Shinbundang Line), Apgujeong Station (Line 3), Apgujeongrodeo Station (Suin–Bundang Line) or Cheongdam Station (Line 7), and check the map distance to the club you want.
Daytime: Garosu-gil in Sinsa-dong has fashion stores and brunch cafés, Apgujeong Rodeo Street has luxury brands and select shops, and COEX Mall has the Starfield Library.
Getting back to your hotel after the club
- Subway: last trains are roughly 1 a.m. on weekdays and midnight on weekends and holidays, and the exact time depends on the line and station. Check a subway app on the day.
- Taxi: Seoul taxis add a late-night surcharge of 20% from 22:00 to 23:00, 40% from 23:00 to 02:00, and 20% again from 02:00 to 04:00. Leaving the club after 2 a.m. costs less than leaving at 1 a.m.
- Night bus: Seoul runs late-night "Owl" buses, numbered with an N.
- Set up first: install a taxi app before you go out, carry some cash, and save 1330 (Korea Travel Helpline) in your phone. More on our getting around at night page.
Staying within walking distance takes care of all of this. You walk home at 4 a.m., and you can go back to the hotel to change between dinner and the club.
Which area should you pick?
- First trip, on a budget, or going out alone: Hongdae. It has the most clubs you can just walk into, and the airport train stops there.
- You want an international crowd, English at the door, or house and techno: Itaewon, as long as your dates include a Friday or Saturday.
- A group celebrating with bottle service: Gangnam, close to the specific club. Book the table first, then the hotel.
- Two or three nights out: stay in Hongdae or Itaewon and take a taxi to Gangnam for the table night, because Gangnam's door is the hardest to get through without a booking.
If you are in Seoul for Halloween, it falls on Saturday, October 31 in 2026. Our club pages expect Hongdae and Itaewon clubs to fill up by about 22:00 that night, and the Saturday subway ends at midnight, so staying close is worth even more.
Once you know your area, NightFlow can book a table at a club nearby with no deposit and no broker fee. Bring your physical passport either way: clubs are 19+ and check ID at the door (entry rules).
