A club with discrimination towards foreigners and unprofessional behaviour. The security guard here cursed at me and spoke very rudely from the very beginning, and could not give an actual reason to not let me in. By the way, I’m a good looking woman who was dressed nicely. And I had previously attended this club, so it was strange that this bouncer had an issue with me. He behaved erratically as soon as I walked up. When he saw my face was foreign, he spouted random words incoherently, such as ‘reservation…ahh’ and seemed to give up finding a believable lie mid-sentence, and gave me a rude facial expression. I initially spoke English to him trying to explain that I had been there previously, also on a Saturday night around the same time, and he suddenly raised his voice to me, borderline shouting, ‘no English.’ He seemed strangely and excessively angry that I spoke English. As I was attempting to use Google Translate to explain to him what I just said, he raised his voice at me again and spoke in an incredibly disrespectful tone in Korean, which even foreigners can understand the vibe of, and seemed very agitated for someone who was standing around with nothing to do. With this unprovoked rude behavior, I asked him directly if this was racism, and he could not answer the question. Suddenly, several women who looked Asian walked up, he didn’t even check their ID properly, they may not have even all been Korean but just appeared so. He checked them extremely briefly before ushering them in politely, very differently to how he treated me. I told him that I understood the interaction was due to racism, and he swore at me aggressively in English as I walked away. I have never, ever had such a rude bouncer in my life. Other security guards in Korea have always been polite to me. I reported his behavior to a club staff, one of which kept saying that they do not have policies against foreigners, and that it depended on the customer’s style and capacity of the club. I can guarantee my style was good enough, as I had been into the club before, and many others around Gangnam, and the capacity clearly was not full when he let in several women after me. Another staff seemed stunned when I reported the interaction and did not do anything to rectify the situation. There is only so much I can do to let people know about how disgusting this establishment is, as I’m sure they don’t care about the opinion of a foreigner, but this is just to let other foreigners know and also any Koreans who would not want to support such a place. 외국인에 대한 차별과 매우 비전문적인 운영을 하는 클럽입니다. 이곳의 보안요원은 처음부터 저에게 욕설을 하고 매우 무례하게 대했으며, 저를 입장시키지 않는 이유도 제대로 설명하지 못했습니다. 참고로 저는 단정하고 깔끔하게 차려입었고, 이전에도 이 클럽에 방문한 적이 있었기 때문에 이번에만 문제가 생긴 것은 매우 이상했습니다. 입구에 다가가자마자 그는 이상할 정도로 신경질적인 태도를 보였습니다. 제 얼굴이 외국인이라는 것을 보자 갑자기 “예약… 아…” 같은 말을 횡설수설하더니, 그럴듯한 핑계를 찾다가 중간에 포기한 것처럼 보였고, 무례한 표정까지 지었습니다. 저는 예전에 토요일 같은 시간대에 이 클럽에 온 적이 있다고 영어로 설명하려 했는데, 그는 갑자기 목소리를 높이며 거의 소리를 치듯 “No English.“라고 말했습니다. 제가 영어를 사용했다는 이유만으로 지나치게 화를 내는 것처럼 보였습니다. 그래서 방금 했던 말을 설명하기 위해 구글 번역기를 사용하려고 했지만, 그는 다시 목소리를 높여 매우 무례한 말투로 한국어를 했습니다. 한국어를 잘 못하는 외국인이라도 그의 공격적이고 무시하는 태도는 충분히 느낄 수 있을 정도였습니다. 특별히 바쁜 상황도 아니었는데, 이유 없이 매우 신경질적인 모습을 보였습니다. 이처럼 아무런 이유 없이 무례한 행동을 하기에 저는 그에게 이것이 인종차별 때문이냐고 직접 물었습니다. 하지만 그는 그 질문에 답하지 못했습니다. 그러던 중 외모상 아시아인으로 보이는 여성 몇 명이 들어오려고 하자, 그는 신분증도 제대로 확인하지 않은 채 매우 짧게 확인하고는 친절하게 바로 입장시켰습니다. 그들이 모두 한국인이었는지는 알 수 없지만, 적어도 저를 대했던 태도와는 완전히 달랐습니다. 저는 이번 일이 인종차별 때문이라고 생각한다고 말했고, 자리를 떠나는 저를 향해 그는 영어로 공격적으로 욕설까지 했습니다. 이렇게 무례한 보안요원은 지금까지 한 번도 본 적이 없습니다. 한국의 다른 클럽 보안요원들은 항상 예의 바르게 대해 주었습니다. 이후 클럽 직원에게 그의 행동을 신고했습니다. 한 직원은 계속해서 “외국인 출입을 막는 정책은 없으며, 손님의 스타일과 클럽의 수용 인원에 따라 달라진다”고만 반복했습니다. 하지만 저는 이전에도 이 클럽과 강남의 여러 클럽에 문제없이 입장한 적이 있었기 때문에 제 복장이나 스타일에 문제가 있었다고는 생각하지 않습니다. 또한 제가 거절당한 직후 다른 여성들을 계속 입장시키는 것을 봤기 때문에, 클럽이 만원이었다는 설명도 납득하기 어려웠습니다. 다른 직원 한 명은 제가 상황을 설명하자 매우 당황한 표정을 지었지만, 결국 아무런 조치도 취하지 않았습니다. 제가 할 수 있는 것은 이곳의 실상을 다른 사람들에게 알리는 것뿐입니다. 아마 이곳은 외국인의 의견에는 관심이 없을지도 모르지만, 적어도 다른 외국인들과 이런 곳을 이용하고 싶지 않은 한국인들에게는 참고가 되었으면 합니다.
